Faith Spin-Off - Whedonverse.org Campaign

Faith in the Whedonverse

To celebrate those fans who refuse to fade away, the Whedonverse Multimedia Project is raffling off an chance to win some action figures in honor of their continuing efforts. The first raffle begins with Faith and the efforts of Save Angel to bring back the Whedonverse in the form of a Faith spin-off.

From now until June 30, every $5 donated to the Whedonverse Multimedia Project will automatically enter you into the drawing to win a 12" Sideshow Faith Action Figure. According to Sideshow Collectibles, this action figure is a limited edition with only 500 in circulation.

In addition, anyone making a donation during this time will have their name added to a card that will be sent to Eliza Dushku via her management letting her know that fans would love to see her in a spin-off. Hopefully there will be enough donations to provide a complete set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel the Series and Firefly to the Playa Vista Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library System.

Fans who’ve already worked hard to show their appreciation of Eliza’s work as Faith are the folks over at Save Angel. Whedonverse.org recently interviewed Gman, one of the organizers of the campaign, to find out more about their spin-off campaign.

What prompted the Save Angel team to begin running a Spin-off campaign?

As it became clear that Angel was not going to return as a series, our efforts turned to campaigning for a general spin-off and a feature film. We all knew that we’d had it pretty good for eight years and now we were going to face our first season without Buffy or Angel. These series showed what television could be at its finest. The combination of drama, action, and humor that they brought is very rare. They were amazing because they managed to speak to us about some of the most important things in life in shows that featured superhumans, vampires, demons, witches, and outcasts. We knew that there would be a hole in the schedule, but we continue to campaign because there is a hole in our hearts.

Why was the character of Faith chosen for the campaign?

Back in June 2004, a reliable source with ties to Mutant Enemy reported that Joss Whedon’s favorite spin-off idea was one featuring Faith. Last October, AICN reported that Joss was still "salivating" to do Faith spin-off series. Our source confirmed this. This was the catalyst for the Faith campaign. It’s easy to see why Faith would great to build a series around. We’ve seen enough of her to know that that she’s a great character and that Eliza is electrifying as Faith, but there is still some mystery to her.

Does the campaign support other characters as well?

Yes. We’ve asked our artists to design campaign postcards to mention that along with Eliza Dushku as Faith, we wish to see James Marsters, Amy Acker, and J. August Richards reprise their roles as Spike, Fred/Illyria, and Gunn in a spin-off. Spike in particular is very popular and justifiably so. Most people would agree that he helped make the last season of Angel arguably its best.

What types of activities has the campaign done to promote a Faith spin-off?

Our members have sent postcards to Joss, Eliza, network executives at the WB, Fox, ABC, UPN, and TNT and prominent media figures that cover television such as Michael Ausiello, Matt Roush, Kristin Veitch, Robert Bianco, Gillian Flynn, and David Bianculli. We have also sent our press kits to these media figures along with Angel action figures and chocolate angels. When we kicked off the campaign, we sent Eliza a cookie bouquet in care of her talent agency. To promote Eliza, we asked our members to vote for Tru Calling in TV Guide Online’s The Water Cooler as Thursday evening’s best program every week when it returned briefly to Fox’s schedule. Tru Calling held its own in that poll against competition like the OC and Survivor.

Have there been any encouraging signs from Joss or Eliza about the possibility of a spin-off?

Yes. Recently, a reader posted a question to Lorrie Lynch at USAWeekendMagazine.com asking if Joss was writing a Buffy/Angel reunion show. Ms. Lynch reported that Joss said that if he goes back to the Angel or Buffy universe it will be through "Willow or Faith, or another character that has great resonance with fans.” Joss was also interviewed by Dark Worlds and stated he isn’t completely done with Angel and Buffy characters. He said, “There’re a lot of characters in that universe that are a.) very exciting, b.) very beloved, c.) played by people I really like, who d.) would actually like to play those parts again.” He’s also made some positive statements about a possible Spike TV movie. This is all exciting stuff.

One of Eliza’s favorite charities is Camp Hale. Is the Faith spin-off campaign involved in supporting her charity? If so, how?

On our home page, we have a section on Camp Hale where its banner is posted and we express our proud support of its cause. The banner is a link to information about the history of the charity and the Eliza Dushku Foundation, a Q & A with Aaron Dushku, and details about donating. We had this information up even before we began the Faith spin-off campaign.

How can fans participate in the campaign?

Thank you for asking. Visit our website at www.saveangel.org and visit the Raising the Stakes section of our forum for details on the Faith spin-off campaign. To participate in the Angel feature film campaign visit the Raising the Bar section of our forum. Be sure to check out our fan fiction and role-playing sections, also. In addition, visit our Other Places and Campaigns section to view links to other campaigns and sites. The Whedonverse is an amazing place and thanks to its fans there are a lot of great stops.

Whedonverse.org would like to thank the folks at Save Angel for taking the time to speak with us. Best of luck in your campaign. We plan future raffles to highlight the efforts of fans who want an Angel feature film and a Spike telemovie.

In addition to Faith, let’s also have a spin-off of Amy the Rat! Or we could have a spin-off of Dawn’s friend Janice. Maybe we could get a spin-off of Robin Wood! How about a spin-off of the Janitor guy in that "I Only Have Eyes for You" who got arrested even though ghost spirits made him do it! Come on people let’s not limit ourselves! This is a WHOLE UNIVERSE full of characters, I’m sure there’s an episode that has a guy crossing the street in the background whose story is just as interesting as any other Buffy character. Better yet, let’s petition for the Buffy Spin-off network - 24 hours of programming about lesser known characters! AWESOME!! I just can’t get enough BUFFY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think people need to learn to LET GO. Let the franchise die with dignity.

If you support Eliza and have expendable income to give to a charity, you should donate money to Camp Hale instead.

Hey Loser, It’s a freakin’ TV Show. The world is not going to crumble because Faith does not get a Spin-off. If you’re concerned about the world crumbling, then turn off your TV and do some volunteer work with people less fortunate than yourself. It’s amazing how many people take the energy to rally around a TV show, but rarely take the time to even pick up trash off the sides of the street in their own neighborhood.

TV does not keep the world from crumbling!!!

I’m all for a Faith show! Maybe they could go for what they wanted at the ens of Buffy and do that Spike/Faith show. But this sounds good too. I’m not holding my hopes up though...

A new spin-off would be great to see, but it would be even better if it was not about Faith. They need a spin-off with a more famous character like...Xander, or Willow, or even Andrew in his new duities as a Watcher. That would be humourous to see. Anywho, Faith just isn’t really a good character to do a spin-off on, especially since Eliza already had her own televison show previously. It would just confuse too many people if she had another.

"TV does not keep the world from crumbling!!!"

No, but I think the point is to try and keep TV from crubling.

I don’t think the person was acting "righteous". I think he was just commenting on someone saying that the world was crumbling without a Faith TV show. I understand being a dedicated fan, I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t. But I also think it’s unhealthy for a persons entire world to revolve around a television show. Someone who makes a comment about the world crumbling because of their TV show not continuing is taking it a little too far. So charity work or not, if Buffy means that much to you, it might do you goods to get involved with some other activities outside of your television set. Let’s face Star Trek fans who actually learn Klingon as a language ARE laughable. I would hate for the same connotations to apply to Buffy fans!

Agreed. There’s more to life than "the whedonverse". As for the person who told people who are "judging" to get out of the forums, last time I checked I live in a free country where the first amendment says something about that little thing called "freedom of speech". Me, I’m just stating an opinion, I’m not trying to be a bad guy saying that the whedonverse should end or whatever but there’s so much more to life than sitting in front of the freaking boob-tube waiting for a spin-off of Buffy/Angel. The person whom I quoted above was not trying to be rude or anything, he was stating that the world will indeed not crumble if you LET GO (yes, I said that) of Joss Whedon’s shows - the world will crumble if you let go of friends, family and manners. I think the franchise needs to die in excellence, not with repetitive shows.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Whenever I see articles like this, I worry. As much as I love Faith, I’d hate to see her return in a show co-starring Spike, I’d hate to see the fiesty, no-nonsense Slayer abused by him. In the end, S7 was painful to watch. At its best the show was about the Scoobies, not an abusive, self-absorbed vampire.

Faith, great. With Spike? I’ll pass.

I didn’t realize people who watch Buffy were so against doing volunteer work.

Hey Caleb, Maybe in addition to using your freedom of speech, you can also use spell check and the space bar. I’m glad I don’t strike YOU as intelligent.
