Joss Whedon talks about politics, X-Men and more.

Sunday 24 October 2004, by Webmaster

Joss Whedon posted a comment on Whedonesque:

Hey guys. I wanted to post on the thread about the fund-raiser, but it’s long gone. So I’ll post on the X-Men thread instead.

The truth about the X-Men is...

...much less important than this election. Much less important than putting someone in the White House who knows the difference between leading and bullying. I’m here to confirm that I will be doing the phone-party on Saunday and I’m urging any and everyone to attend one or even host one. (Highstakes2004.com.) I plan to be incredibly funny and insightful, or mention some people who have been in the past. We can talk about politics, we can talk about Buffy, we can talk about car maintenence (though I’ll mostly just listen at that point) and I will once and for all tell you all what IS going on with the X-Men. And then we can talk about politics some more.

So many people are acting like there’s little difference between Kerry and Bush and that is not the case. If you’re for Bush I doubt I can sway you but if you’re one of those people grumbling about politicians all being the same I’m begging you to look hard at the facts and at the smirking face of the man who is doing more damage to this country than any president in my lifetime. We cannot let apathy decide our fate. I’m sounding all soapbox-y but I am truly afraid for our economic infrastucture, our dwindling natural reserves and most of all our place in the world. We need to act.

Uh, and it’ll be... fun...

It will. Insane Phone Posse, and for a great cause. Get in. I’ll stay on the phone as long as anyone will listen. Let freedom ring, unless it’s on vibrate. Can we pretend I didn’t say that?

Later he wrote that: Actually, after careful consideration, we’ll probably have it on Sunday instead of Saunday. More people that actually exist will probably show up. The party on Hmnoortzday sucked large.

I always knew Whedon was a good guy, I’d like to read a transcript of the event. It IS an event right?

Isn’t it interesting how everyone is entitled to their opinion, unless they are famous? Is it because people can actually hear what someone is saying? Famous or not, everyone should be allowed to voice their thoughts. I thought that was one of our freedoms.

The X-Men is more important than this election. I care much more what will hapen to them then some Pompus (probably spelled that wrong, don’t care) windbags in Washington.

Woah, Kerry Lies your rude. Joss and any other human being on earth is allowed their own opinion. Like your crap right there thats your opinion. Aw you all butt hurt because Joss doesnt like your preferred candidate? Famous or not famous, he has a right to an opinion. we all do and I for one am very interested in what he has to say, you dont have to agree with him. Just be open minded... sidenote that thing he said about "let freedom ring, unless its on vibrate" just reassures me how clever this guy is! God I miss his work being on TV

I say "Bravo" Joss Whedon for caring enough about our democractic institutions and traditions to give his time and efforts for this project. My only sorrow is that I could not attend one of the parties. And if there is any kind of mindless parrot talk - a great deal of it is being prattled by - well, we won’t go there. Suffice to say that I have a great regard for Joss Whedon and Both Johns.

But there is a difference. Let’s face it, if Joss Whedon or a bunch of Hollywood-types were killed in a terrorist attack, how bad would our infrastructure be damaged? Not much. The guy working at the oil plant has a lot more to worry about. The price of being a rich liberal is that you don’t have to worry because no one is really aiming for you.

Look, I’m all for people having an opinion. That’s fine. But when celebs, which includes Joss (when more than 10 bigwigs in Hollywood know your name, you’re a celeb), start acting like their money and fame have all of a sudden have brought them such enlightenment and they must educate our plebian minds, that’s when I get angry. Joss hasn’t done that PER SE, but he is surrounded by too many of those types. Like I said before, if your vote is based on what some celebrity said (liberal OR conservative), either read about the issues or don’t vote.
