Nathan Fillion supports "Into the Black" Firefly Spin-off by Fans

Tuesday 21 March 2006, by Webmaster

No, that’s not just a catchy title to grab your attention.

Friday night found me and some friends going out to the bar to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. When I went to meet them, we had to wait because one of my friends said “We have to wait for my buddy, he’s coming to meet us.” Which was quickly followed by “Oh, and you might be a little star struck.” Now, I’ve worked in the film business for 10 years, and have worked with some big stars, and I don’t tend to get star struck very easily. I asked who it was, and he said “My friend Nathan.” At which point I turn, and see Nathan Fillion walking down the street towards us. To say the least, I was a little shocked. Introductions were made all around, and when my friend introduced me to Nathan, he said I was a big Serenity fan, and I shook Nathan’s hand, telling him I was a huge Browncoat...to which Nathan responded by indicating the brown jacket he was wearing, and said “Funny enough, so am I.”

As the evening went on, I was fortunate to spend a great deal of time talking with Nathan, who is a very funny, warm and gracious guy. He was more than happy to talk at length about Firefly and Serenity, telling me I’d have to stop him, as he’d talk himself blue in the face about it.

During the Firefly talk, I broached the subject of Into the Black with him. He said he’d heard of us, but wasn’t that familiar with what we were doing. So I told him a little about it, and he seemed very interested, and asked a number of questions. He then asked how we were financing the project, and I told him it was basically all out of pocket for those involved. We were each donating our time, and materials, and paying for everything ourselves. Nathan then reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet, and placed a very generous donation into my hand. After thanking him profusely, I told him I’d of course be telling the people involved where the money came from, but asked if he wanted it to remain anonymous to the general public, because I knew we’d all want to splash it up on the front page of the website. Nathan’s response - “Go for it.”

So, on behalf of the cast and crew of Into the Black, I want to extend a Big Damn Thank You! to Nathan Fillion for his overwhelming gesture of support. You made a number of people very happy today... a few of them even had to sit down (some faster than others), and I hope we do you proud.
