Sarah Michelle Gellar - "Alice" Movie - Buffy star set for Alice remake

Wednesday 22 June 2005, by Webmaster

The remake is based on a computer game version of the story

Former Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar is to play the lead role in a big screen adaptation of Alice In Wonderland.

The 28-year-old actress will play Alice in adulthood in a modern interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic stories.

It will be based on a computer game in which Alice destroys enemies with playing cards and croquet mallets.

The US game, called Alice, became a best-seller when it was released five years ago.

Threatening

The Alice in the game is a young woman consigned to psychiatric care following the death of her parents.

In Wonderland she encounters many of the story’s favourite characters, such as the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter.

But it is transformed into a threatening place where she has to battle to stay alive.

The new Alice film will be directed by Marcus Nispel, who recently made a new version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Buffy star set for Alice role

Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar is to play Alice in a big screen update of the Lewis Carroll classic.

Gellar, 28, plays the heroine after she grows up. But, there is a huge twist as Universal Pictures will not be adapting the classic books, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.

Instead, Alice will be based on the best-selling US computer game of the same name, in which the heroine wipes out the baddies with razor-sharp playing cards, exploding Jack-in-the-boxes and deadly croquet mallets.

The game shows Alice as a disturbed young woman consigned to a mental asylum following the death of her parents. She returns to Wonderland and encounters all the old characters, from the Mad Hatter to the Queen of Hearts.

But Wonderland is now a dark and threatening world and she must battle to escape alive.

Alice will be directed by Marcus Nispel, who was behind the recent remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
