Sarah Michelle Gellar Out Of Angel Finale

March 27, 2004 - World Entertainment News Network Angel fans are disappointed to learn Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be reprising her Buffy role in the show’s season finale, after bosses decided against it.

Joss Whedon, the show’s executive producer, tell’s TV GUIDE’s online edition that he didn’t invite Gellar to appear in the final episode of Angel - a Buffy spin-off, because he didn’t want it to "revolve around a guest star".

He explains, "I want to end the show with the people who’ve been in the trenches together, the characters who have lived - and occasionally died - together, the regulars."

Whedon invited Gellar to appear in the second-to-last episode, but she wasn’t available because she was in Tokyo, Japan, working on the horror film THE GRUDGE when the show was being shot.

Whedon’s partner, Jeffrey Bell, says show executives eventually learned that Gellar was available for the final episode despite being booked at the time of the penultimate one. But by that time, the second-to-last episode had already been written and shot, and getting her into the last episode "didn’t make any sense" with the plot that had been written so far.

Bell adds, "By the time it became a possibility, the ship had sort of sailed."

    yes very dissapointing, the end of the "buffyverse" (i highly doubt there will be any tv movies or big screen films) and Buffy wont even be there....

    It’s too bad she didn’t get into the second-to-last one, but Whedon is right: the show isn’t about Buffy and it shouldn’t end about Buffy.

    It’s a shame that Buffy won’t be appearing, but it’s probably a blessing in disguise. Angel always was, by far, the inferior show. They don’t seem to be able to arc stories properly - season 5 being the latest ridiculous example. No doubt in the last few episodes they’ll try to do a "we hinted at this in every episode previous" type finish. But to be honest, it’s stupid. What’s the point of killing off Fred if Illyria ends up acting just like her??? Get a grip Joss. I’m glad Angel’s finished. And I’m glad that they won’t get a chance to screw up my memory of Buffy by bringing her back to this pitiful show.
