Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She Won’t Appear on ‘Buffy’ Reboot But It’s a ‘Great Story’ to Be Retold

“I’ve told my story with it,” actress tells TheWrap
We may not know where the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot will land yet — but we do have an answer as to whether or not Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, will appear on it.
And that’s a no, as the actress told TheWrap in an interview Friday that she’s not involved in the project at all and that her story in that universe has been “told.”
However, she is still waving her Sunnydale High pom-poms for “Midnight, Texas” creator Monica Owusu-Breen’s take on the teen Slayer — which was announced last summer and is being executive produced by “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon.
“I don’t know anything about it, honestly,” Gellar told TheWrap, when we asked if she would appear on the potential series, if asked. “I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it. But, you know, I’ve told my story with it.”
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran for seven seasons from 1996-2003 — with the first five airing on The WB and the final two on UPN — all including Gellar in the titular role.
The plans for a “Buffy” reboot were revealed last July, with Whedon on board and Owusu-Breen set as showrunner for the in-the-works series, which will feature a black female lead character. There is currently no network or streamer attached to the 20th Century Fox-produced project.
Gellar added : “For me, the beauty of the show was the madness and horrors of high school manifesting in actual literal horrors. And I may look young, thanks to all my Olay products, but I don’t look like I’m a kid. (laughs)“
OK, the actress made that quip about Olay because she’s starring in the skin care company’s first-ever Super Bowl ad this Sunday, which also happens to be her first-ever Super Bowl ad. The 30-second bit is a spoof on slasher movies, with Gellar reprising her “scream queen” role from films like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Scream 2.”
And she is more than happy to poke fun at those parts for Olay.
“People always ask me about being pigeonholed and it makes me laugh a little bit,” Gellar said. “Am I being pigeonholed as a superhero ? Am I being pigeonholed as the ultimate villain ? Honestly, I feel like I’ve been so lucky to do so many different things that if I’m pigeonholed for something really successful I’ll be happy if that’s my lasting legacy.”
Gellar is looking to get back into television after a few years off, following the cancellation of her CBS comedy “The Crazy Ones” in 2014. She’s currently working on a potential limited series executive produced by herself and Ellen DeGeneres, based on Alice Feeney’s 2017 novel “Sometimes I Lie.”
“I read this book that I absolutely loved and I tracked down the author, literally while she’s writing her next novel in England, and said, ‘I’m ready to start working again and this is what I want my next project to be,’” Gellar told us. “And I had to stalk her for a while, she was a little unsure. And I brought it to Ellen and her team and she saw the things I did and we got an incredible Academy Award-nominated screenwriter who is writing it right now, and we will make it as perfect as possible and then we’ll make it.”
