Sarah Michelle Gellar Talks Buffy Toon

Thursday 21 October 2004, by Webmaster

Sarah Michelle Gellar told SCI FI Wire that she turned down a chance to voice her most famous role in a proposed animated version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because she couldn’t devote the necessary time to the show. "Literally the joke is I’m a commitment-phobe actor right now," she said in an interview while promoting her latest film, The Grudge. "I am a commitment-phobe because I was nothing but contractually bound for years."

Gellar added, "I was contractually bound to Buffy, to the Scooby movies, to whatever it was. I don’t do something unless I can commit 110 percent, and I just can’t say that three times a month or this week I could actually, absolutely do an animated show."

Gellar said that she’s not even sure the Buffy fan base would go for an animated series. "What’s the term everyone uses?" she asked. "Jumping the shark. You never want to inundate, in my opinion. I think Buffy went out when it was still on top. I felt like we came back in that last season, did the show we wanted to do. I was really happy. I don’t know why, then, you go back. What can Buffy do?

"I remember the pitch to me about the cartoon was like, ’She can turn into things and have magical powers,’" Gellar said. "To me, that wasn’t what Buffy was about. To me, Buffy was a real girl. These were metaphors for real demons. This was about how, in high school, the demons of high school literally become these monsters. So I’m not sure why you’d make an animated show. And no one showed me a script."

She says we wouldn’t go for a movie and now she says we wouldn’t go for a cartoon. Does she know her fans at all?

That’s actually kind of smart of her. I mean, there’s no way the cartoon will be as good as the series itself, and hey, what’s the expression? Beating a dead horse? Who am I kidding, I’m gonna watch that show obsessively whenever it airs.

I think that she likes to bring up jumping the shark a little too much. IMO should be saying what the fans want, I hate it when people speak on behalf of others when it isn’t their place to it’s a very arrogant thing to do.I respect her decision not to do any more Buffy but she doesn’t speak for the fans and she shouldn’t try to.

I dont buy the comics or would watch a animated show aimed at kids even if it were a form of "Buffy".

That’s the thing though. It’s being made by the same people that made Batman The animated series. It’s going to be dark and serious and aimed at adults. It’s basically going to be the show. They’re going to fill in the gaps they never had the time or money to do.

I think Buffy is the biggest fandom since Star Trek. If anyhing the fans want more. If the fans didn’t care, THEN it would be overkill. But that’s not the case.

I’m a little annoyed with SMG’s hypocrisy. She keeps putting down Buffy (different seasons/episodes, and ideas such as the cartoon, films, etc.) all in the name of "quality." Like Joss and the writers haven’t written some of the BEST stuff for women ever-big screen or small! That’s fine, she’s entitled to her opinion, and has as much right to bite the hand that fed her, as I have to say that I don’t agree with her. Where I find her to be hypocritical is that now with her movie The Grudge—she’s suddenly going to the comic-cons she avoided while she was on Buffy. She’s even making commercials for Buffy repeats on FX [which is currently showing the dreaded, "jump the shark" 6th season she hated so much] telling the Buffy fans something to the effect of: "You’re watching Buffy on FX. And remember to watch my new movie The Grudge on Friday." You can’t have it both ways, and to insult her fans and the entire cast and creative team by saying how bad Buffy was and would be, is just wrong.
