Episode 3: Brother’s Keeper

When the husband of Harrison’s new love is shot to death, Tru grows convinced that Harrison is the killer.

As Tru walks through the morgue, she hears a male voice cry out for help and thinks she’s going to relive another day. It turns out to be Davis, who needs help with a ladder. As they talk Davis tells Tru, “we’re all someplace for a reason.” Meanwhile, inside a stately brownstone, a man we will come to know as Andrew attacks Harrison with a fireplace poker. Harrison aims a gun at Andrew, about to pull the trigger. As the scene fades to black a gunshot goes off.

Fourteen hours earlier, Tru awakens when her phone rings. It’s Harrison reminding her about their brunch engagement later that day. After Harrison hangs up we realize he’s in bed with a beautiful 27-year-old named Sarah Miller. As Sarah rises to take a shower, Harrison notices a bruise on her back. Sarah shrugs it off, claiming she slipped while working out. Later Harrison and Sarah drop by Tru’s apartment for brunch. It’s difficult for Tru not to notice the chemistry between the pair. Later, while shoe-shopping, Lindsay tells Tru she’s going out on a third date with James, and if she follows the “third date rule” that means they’ll sleep together. That night, at a bar, Tru tells Harrison she really liked Sarah. Harrison, in turn, tells her that Sarah is divorced. As they talk Harrison’s cell phone rings. It’s Sarah, who asks Harrison to come to her place right away. Later that night Lindsay tells Tru she slept with James, and it turned out to be the worst sex she’s ever had. The conversation is interrupted when Gardez wheels a corpse into the morgue. Tru finds the deceased’s wallet and discovers a snapshot of Andrew and Sarah inside. Fearing for Harrison’s safety, Tru calls Meredith, who tells her that their brother has been arrested and charged with murder. Shocked, Tru enters the crypt area, where Andrew turns to her and says, “help me.” Tru then awakens in her apartment… and the day begins anew.

As the day repeats itself, Harrison telephones Tru and reminds her about their brunch engagement. Later Harrison shows up at the apartment and introduces Tru to Sarah. This time Tru claims she bumped into Andrew the previous day. Sarah admits that she was once married, which comes as a surprise to Harrison. Harrison pulls Tru aside, and Tru tells him to stay away from Sarah. Afterward Tru makes her way to a harbor area, where she photographs Andrew’s yacht. Andrew appears, and noting how attractive Tru is, invites her inside for a drink. Tru claims she’s an author putting together a proposal for a book about the harbor. She deftly steers the conversation towards Andrew’s personal life, and inquires about a photograph of Sarah hanging on a wall. Andrew tells her it’s a picture of his wife. Armed with this information, Tru confronts Sarah, who claims that, although married, she and Andrew are no longer having relations, and also claims that Andrew physically abused her. Despite this she still loves him. Later Tru speaks with Lindsay, and this time she advises her not to sleep with James just because it’s the third date. She again warns Harrison to stay away from Sarah.

Tru returns to Andrew’s yacht to do some snooping. Andrew catches her in he act and threatens to phone the police. Andrew tells Tru that Sarah married him for his money, and he refuses to divorce her because she’ll get half of everything. He also denies he ever struck her. Later Meredith helps Tru track down a 911 recording. The emergency call was made by Sarah, who asked for help after Andrew threatened to kill her. The following day Sarah told police she wasn’t pressing charges. Meanwhile Sarah tells Harrison that she fears for her life. Harrison takes her to an acquaintance, Serge, who deals in unregistered guns. When Sarah has second thoughts about purchasing a weapon, Harrison buys it for her. He tells Sarah he’ll keep the gun, and that he’s only a phone call away. Later Tru finds out about the gun in Harrison’s possession, and warns that he’s going to shoot and kill Andrew. When Harrison voices enormous skepticism, Tru reminds him that she relives days, and to prove her claim begins telling him what’s about to happen in the bar they’re in. Her prophesies all turn out to be true. The final prophecy is that Sarah will phone him and claim she’s in trouble. Moments later Harrison’s phone rings. It’s Sarah, who claims she’s in danger. Harrison heads out to save her.

Tru tries to stop Harrison from going to Sarah, but he won’t listen. Later Meredith phones Tru with some information. It turns out that police were never able to locate Andrew the night he allegedly attacked Sarah. Tru realizes it’s because Andrew was never there. She also realizes that Sarah is setting Harrison up to kill Andrew so she’ll inherit all of Andrew’s wealth (if they got divorced, Andrew would get half). Inside Sarah’s darkened house, Andrew helps Sarah repair an electrical outlet. What he doesn’t know is that Sarah is carefully choreographing things so Harrison will murder him. Moments later Harrison breaks into the dark house. Thinking it’s an intruder, Andrew grabs a fireplace poker and lunges at Harrison. Sarah urges Harrison to kill Andrew, claiming Andrew will kill them both if Harrison fails. Harrison draws the gun but refuses to pull the trigger. Sarah grabs it from his hand and shoots Andrew in the chest. She then tells Harrison that everything’s been arranged to make it look like he fired the shot. Then Sarah turns and sees Andrew standing up, unharmed. Tru appears, and Andrew explains that she advised him earlier in the day to wear a bulletproof vest. He took the advice. As police sirens sound in the distance, Harrison walks off… and Tru tells Sarah she should have settled for half.

Later Lindsay tells Tru that James turned out to be a colossal bore, but she slept with him anyway to shut him up. At the morgue Tru tells Davis he was right: there is a reason why she’s around.
