Whedon’s Serenity Flies at Uni

The Firefly movie takes off.

March 04, 2004 - Heads-up Firefly fans! Universal Pictures has signed a deal with writer-director Joss Whedon to bring the short-lived series to the big-screen in the form of a motion picture entitled Serenity. The project will be Whedon’s feature directing debut and he’ll also write the script. Universal says that Serenity will continue to expand on the adventures of the memorable characters from Firefly, which is now a best-seller on DVD.

The original characters will be joined by new characters created expressly for the film. Exactly who is returning? Nathan Fillion is set to reprise his role as Captain Malcolm ’Mal’ Reynolds, Gina Torres will be back as Zoe Warren, Morena Baccarin returns as Inara Serra, Jewel Staite as Kaylee Frye, Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb, Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam and Summer Glau as River Tam.

The film will center on Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran of a galactic civil war, who is now eking out a living by pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity.

According to Universal’s statement, Mal takes on two new passengers in the film - a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister - he gets more than he bargained for. The pair are actually fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe. Hunted by vastly different enemies, the crew begins to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board their own ship.
