Joss Whedon spoke at the "Wizard World convention" in Chicago in August 2004 about his original plans for bringing the character of Tara back :
“In one of the final episodes, the third to last episode, Buffy was going to basically get a ‘get out of jail free’ card. One completely reality-altering things that she could have - she could bring Angel back to her, she could do anything she wanted.
