Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who leapt to stardom in the lead roll of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is to star in The Grudge.

It’s a film based on the Japanese horror franchise Ju-On, which has been in a huge hit in its home country, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Director Takashi Shimizu now hopes to bring the thriller to worldwide audiences by directing American stars in an English-language remake with heart-stopping scares and surprises.

The movie will be produced by Sam Raimi, the director of Spider-Man.

According to the report, The Grudge is about a curse on someone who dies in the grip of a powerful rage that gathers and affects the places in which that person lived.

Those who encounter this murderous supernatural curse die and a new curse is born - passed like a virus from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror.
