According to Amy Acker, David Boreanaz was able to get creative playing Angelus.
"I think it’s great; he has so much fun playing that character. It’s a lot of improvisation and taking risks. You never know what he’s going to say; it changes from take to take. He’s definitely trying to make a shock; he’s going out of his way to make Fred uncomfortable. "It’s hard. Fred has heard everything he can do. He’s bringing out some of the vulnerability in her."
Episode 4-12: "Calvary". As the gang scrambles to locate Angel’s stolen soul, Lilah emerges from the sewers (where she’s been living) and tries her hand at persuading Angelus to stop the Beast. Of course, she does not succeed. In other developments, Fred finds out that Wesley and Lilah have been knockin’ boots and the news upsets her. Fred and Gunn break up. The gang attempts to replace Angel’s soul but Angelus tricks them into thinking it works and when Cordelia opens the cage, he escapes. The gang also finds out that the Beast is but a minion. Rumor still abounds that the Beast works for Cordelia.
This just in: The Faith episodes of Angel will now air March 5, March 12 and March 19 and Alyson Hannigan will appear as Willow on March 19.
